5 Things Declan McKenna Can’t Live Without on Tour

An exclusive look inside Declan’s life on tour!

Being on the road can be tough, and no one knows that better than Declan McKenna, who’s about to embark on his “Zeroes” world tour. He sat down with us before the first show of the tour in Milwaukee, Wisoncsin to discuss his must have items for the road.

  1. His Guitar

“It seems pretty obvious, but I just had to say it.” he says, laughing. “ You never really know where inspiration will strike for the next song. You go through a lot, touring all of these different cities. I’ve learned so much about life and myself, and I find the best way to express that is through music. It’s really therapeutic for me.”

  1. His dog

“My dog is my everything,” he says through another chuckle. You can catch  pictures of Declan’s French Bulldog, Russel, all over his Instagram page. “He definitely keeps me calm on the road. Nothing’s more calming than just taking him for a walk or just chilling out. He definitely keeps everyone entertained too! He’s so well behaved, he just roams around backstage!”

  1. His Journal

“I can’t go anywhere without it, it’s every thought in my head!,” he says, holding up the black leather bound book. “My mind is always racing, so if I don’t have my notebook down, I lose my thoughts. It has everything in it. Song ideas, stories, poems, basically anything. It’s a good record to look back on and remember all of these amazing experiences.”

  1. Tea

“It really can’t get more British than that,” he says, showcasing his assortment of teas lined up on the tour bus countertop. “There really is tea for every occasion, so you can’t be too prepared.” He holds up a box of chamomile, saying, “This one is for the nights on the road where I really can’t sleep. Travelling takes such a toll on your body that sometimes I really need it to get some rest! My immune system also takes a beating sometimes with all of the travel, so tea really helps preserve my voice for performances. It’s definitely a tour essential!”

  1. Gifts from Fans

As soon as we entered his tour bus, we couldn’t help but notice the piles of eclectic items decorating the space. “These are all from fans,” he says. “They throw things on stage, give them to me when they see me on the street, any time, really. I’m always in for a good surprise. It’s amazing how much time and thought they put into the gifts they give me. Like this one,” he beams, holding up a fan’s drawing. “This had to have taken hours! I can’t believe how much effort someone would put into something just for me. It really does mean so much. After all, this wouldn’t be possible without the fans that come to my shows. For that, I’ll always be immensely grateful.”
