The Magic Behind ‘Fine Line’

Harry Styles takes Columbia through the process of writing his chart-topping sophomore album

Coming off of the success of his debut self-titled album, fans and critics alike wondered how Harry Styles would make his return to the music scene. In typical Styles fashion, it was big, bold, and undeniably great. Filled with gut-wrenching emotional ballads coupled with bouncy pop tunes, the album left fans wondering just how Fine Line came to be. Columbia had the opportunity to go behind the scenes with Harry to understand the process behind creating the album.

Crafted primarily in a studio in Malibu, California, Styles admits that the atmosphere contributed greatly to the feel of the album. “It was important to me that I was in an environment where I could feel creative and free,” he says. The feel definitely comes across in tracks such as “Golden,” which Styles says is “the perfect song for driving down the Pacific Coast highway.”

When asked about penning all of the tracks on the album himself, Styles says, “The writing process was incredibly deep and personal, but I wanted to be genuine to myself and my fans.” The album is circles around a common theme: heartbreak. After experiencing a breakup himself, Styles found himself drawn towards songwriting as a means of coping, which is apparent in “Fine Line” tracks such as “Cherry,” “To Be So Lonely,” and “Falling.”

The process of creating the album wasn’t negative for Styles, however, as he admits, “It was the most enlightening time of my life. I felt true to myself in writing and producing. I feel like this album represents who I am and also who I want to be.”

The release of “Fine Line” stands as a defining moment in Styles’ career and direction as an artist. Full of personality, heartache, and self-discovery, “Fine Line” is a piece that is sure to become a staple in any music-lovers’ playlist. Stream the album here.
